Antique log burner
by French company FAURE REVIN
Vitreous ENAMELLED
Art Nouveau

"MAH JONG"
Dating from 1920's- 30's. It is in EXCELLENT condition.
side-loading with heat regulation knob on door,
opening Hinged lid for cooking surface
and a cast iron baffle plate in the firebox to improve efficiency

The enamel is a marbled, rich SLATE BLUE colour.
*Enameled cast iron colours will not fade, provided the stove is not abused
in wood burners always use wood, never multifuel, so the enamel remains at woodstove temperatures
Never clean using harsh chemicals or scouring pads

This stove is in very good condition and came from a family home in Eastern France
It has a nice sized unusual curving shaped mica window and a very appealing side door
__________________________________________________________________________________
It has been totally dismantled and renovated, fully serviced. All steel & cast iron parts rubbed down & repainted with high temp 900°c stove enamel, steel securing bars replaced, door rope & fire cement replaced, polished
new Mica fitted, tested and heat sealed
_____________________________________
Mah Jongs are inspired by Eastern design.
They came in many colours and are still used in many French homes despite their age.
Greens were more expensive to produce and are therefore rarer than pale blues &browns
THIS IS THE FIRST MODEL WE HAVE SEEN IN THIS COLOUR in 10 yrs of renovating them

It will give you trouble free service for decades to come.
This is a very lovely piece of french architectural artwork.
It will sit in a moderate sized fireplace or in front of a small Victorian chimney breast.
The cast iron pattern extends ALL THE WAY ROUND to the back and so it would also be suitable for the centre of a room or sitting away from a wall, in which case it will be MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

It's design is Art Nouveau because it has the eastern_inspired flowing floral designs and window shape popular in the art nouveau period

These stoves are at risk of being consigned to the scrap yards in France because there is a very rewarding eco-tax scheme that replaces old stoves with newer, cleaner-burning models.
That's fantastic news for lower emissions, but instead of installers simply certifying the older model has been replaced
Installers are encouraged to advertise and accept antiques 'in exchange for' a newer model.
Rather than keeping them for their beauty, as decorative centre-pieces, and as heating sources for spaces without any modern appliances, many people here relinquish them to the dump.

Antique models can be adapted to be highly efficient with some clever chimney design, sensible use and placement and modern technology - see the efficiency page

DESIGN

Picture
Picture
Air flow is controlled by the silver bottom knob
baffle plate in firebox
large mica window
double walled design with cut-out-patterns to induce air-flow
top lifting lid for cooking surface
side-loading door
corrugated grate
All these work perfectly.

This stove is a very handsome and sturdy piece of ART DECO industrial design by one of the most famous French stove foundries.

In terms of efficiency this stove top of it's class for the era and clearly compares very favorably with modern stoves of similar size & budget.
  •  It has an all-round enamel design making it suitable for a central position or placement further into the room (more efficient)
  • It is lined with firebricks which also store the heat.
  • The double walled construction with open latticed designs, allows hot air to flow up through the two layers and circulate through the room faster, acting as a natural fan system.
The efficiency of this model was not tested as it left the market decades before the introduction of such standards.

All woodstoves, however old, save about 45% of energy compared to an open fire.
Antique models can be adapted to be highly efficient with some clever chimney design
sensible use and placement and modern technology - see the links on our blog.
They can also be used with BIO ETHANOL, which burns cleanly, can be sustainably sourced and emits hardly any CO2
