ALL ABOUT ANTIQUE STOVES

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my stove be used in a smokeless zone?
  • Wood is NOT A SMOKELESS FUEL.
  • compressed, kiln dried LOGS FOR WOOD BURNERS are now available certified as SMOKELESS . They burn for longer than ordinary logs.
  • THE DRIER THE WOOD THE MORE EFFICIENT IT WILL BURN, WITH LESS POLLUTION
  • PROVIDED they are used to burn FUEL which has been passed as smokeless, you CAN USE ANY ANTIQUE STOVE INSIDE ANY SMOKELESS ZONE.

In order to burn ordinary wood logs in a smokeless zone, you must use a modern device that has been given an exemption certificate. These are available on the market from around £500.
Antique stoves do not have exemption certificates. (each model costs around £1500-3000 to certify, so unless you can afford to have yours certified, you must only burn smokeless logs in an antique woodstove or smokeless coal in an antique multifuel)
  • The exact wording on the DEFRA regulations states: - "Appliances that do not need exemption: "those burning only an authorised solid fuel."(a smokeless fuel"

OUTSIDE SMOKELESS ZONES Burning wood inside antique wood stoves is allowed

are your stoves guaranteed?
All our stoves are antique or vintage or secondhand models and whilst we take great care in sourcing, dismantling, cleaning, repairing and restoring, we are unable to guarantee them because they are still antiques.

We do guarantee their authenticity as antiques. They are not copies.
We are certified antique dealers and have more than a decade of experience specialising in antique French stoves.

We stress the value of our stoves is inherent in their age, design and beauty and will remain equally valuable long after they have become unsuitable for use as heating appliances.

When we describe a stove as in good/excellent or otherwise working condition we are confident that any modern heating engineer would agree that the stoves are suitable for use in the condition as described.
do these stoves have certificates?
Modern EU/EE/CE certificates are awarded at the point of manufacture and are applied for when a large run of stoves are expected from an assembly line. In the case of antiques, they were assembled long before current testing methods and standards so no conclusions can be made other than a visual or approximate assessment based on a comparison of design factors. It is possible, but highly unlikely than any antique stove will require or be given a modern test certificate.

HOWEVER, many modern models - especially the lower priced ones, are NOT CERTIFIED for burning wood in smokeless zones nor guaranteed for more than two years. Many modern stoves are comparable in efficiency to many antique models. Look for antique stoves with baffles, flu-dampers, firebricks (you can add firebricks easily to any square antique model and with some care to any round/oval shaped one) consider adding ecofans, catalytic convertors, design your chimney or fireplace to be more efficient, use a double lined insulated flu liner, use the driest possible wood, and above all INSULATE YOUR HOME WELL TO REDUCE ENERGY DEMAND

DOES MY STOVE NEED A FLU ADAPTER?
.Yes if you intend to use it for a solid fuel stove rather than a lamp, conversion or as decoration, you will need to take the flue up to the minimum solid fuel appliance regulation for your chimney or flu liner. There are three Common Antique flu sizes, in order of frequency
  • 90/100mm
  • 80/83mm
  • and 110mm
some models have oval flues
Your local regulations will tell you what your sizes must be and your local fitter will advise you about chimney design and flu liner installation. Adapters for our models are available here
CAN MY STOVE RUN ON BIO ETHANOL?
Any stove can run on bio ethanol given a suitable sized burner to fit the firebox and the correct amount of air flow to the flames - read more here
WHY IS THERE PLASTIC IN THE WINDOWS?
MICA WINDOW SHEET does look, feel and can be cut eactly as if it were plastic but it isn't.
It's cut from silica rock and is a clear natural mineral that is used to make antique stove windows.(it has hundreds of other applications)
It will last for around 5 years or longer if cared for.
It was used until tempered low thermal shock and ceramic heat resistance glass was manufactured more cheaply in the mid 20th century. Pyrex, for example, became marketable first and as technology improved and the space race took on speed, stove glass progressed from thin strips to any shape and size you need - with some modern stoves appearing to be made almost entirely of one sheet of glass. MICA SHEET is available here
